Indigenous Business Models and Strategy
Wednesday 30 August 10.30 - 12pm
Jyi is a Bidjara man from Central Queensland and the CEO of Triple A, an Indigenous community-controlled multi-media organisation. He has undertaken tertiary study across a range of areas in Architectural Design, Law, Justice and Business. Jyi has held previous operational and senior leadership positions across State and Federal Government in the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Department of Youth Justice, and Indigenous Business Australia leading IBA’s National Business Program supporting Indigenous Entrepreneurs in business. Jyi serves on the Board of Directors for Karalumba, National Indigenous Radio Service and is the founding Chairperson of the state Indigenous media peak body, Queensland First Nations Media Coalition.

Aboriginal Tourism Development

Founder of Kakadu Organics an Aboriginal owned, female led, company originating from a small Aboriginal community in Kakadu, Northern Territory of Australia. Kylie-Lee grew up in Kakadu, NT and has a passion for creating sustainable communities and increasing economic empowerment for Aboriginal people in business. The business was founded in 2016 as an idea to create unique organic baby clothing featuring hand painted art from the Kakadu Region. Growing very quickly and meeting customer demand Kakadu Organics has now matured into a cultural wellness organisation, producing native foods, bush medicine, and wellness products. Kakadu Organics opened a store in Samford Valley QLD in partnership with QLD tourism to deliver immersive native food and wellness workshops. The Kakadu Organics eco range is now procured by organisations and partnerships such as Qantas, Acore, QTIC, Supply Nation, IBA and more.

Leesa Watego is the Managing Director of Iscariot Media, an agency that works with small businesses, institutions, organisations and governments on creative and digital projects. With a passion for digital media, she created Deadly Bloggers, the first directory of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander bloggers and has been advocating for the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples online ever since.
In 2019 Lisa developed and delivered Digital Tracks, a technology and digital training package for the Indigenous small business sector in South-East Queensland. She was recognised as a Queensland Government Digital Champion in 2016.

Keynote: Aunty Pat Torres

Patricia Mamanyjun Torres is a First Nation woman from the Djugun, Yawuru, Jabirr Jabirr people of the West Kimberley region. Pat has been active in the Australian native foods industry for more than 15 years as a Sole Trader and now Company Director for the last 4 years wild harvesting Kakadu Plum known locally as Gabiny in the West Kimberley. She is nationally recognised for her knowledge about Australia’s first foods and the ancient agricultural practices of her cultural groups in the West Kimberley region.
Pat created the above company in 2019 to maximise the emerging opportunities for the Indigenous led development of the Australian native foods industry in the West Kimberley region of Western Australia and Northern Australia. Pat is currently the WA Director for the First Nations Bushfoods & Botanicals Alliance Australia (FNBBAA). Through her membership on the Northern Australian Aboriginal Kakadu Plum Alliance (NAAKPA) she has become an active member within the industry. Recently Pat created the Jarndu Ngaank Tours from a ‘women’s perspective that operates in Broome and north of Broome to showcase cultural immersion experiences on Country for tourism.

Keynote: Natasha Short

Events Planner, Speaker and Social Change Advocate. Natasha is a descendant of the Jaru people and her original home town is Halls Creek. Born and raised in the East Kimberley, Natasha was aware of social inequities from an early age and has always had a strong desire to be part of a movement that would lift others up and help people to operate within their natural abilities and giftings.
Natasha has been involved within Indigenous Affairs and the Community Development sector for the past 25 years and has accumulated over 20 years of event management experience. Her ability to invest in this vision has been enabled through the unwavering support of her family, who have allowed me enormous freedom and support to work in areas that bring great personal satisfaction. Indigenous people soaring like birds above their circumstances is a theme that resonates deeply within Natasha and her life’s work.

Keynote: Uncle Neville Poelina

Uncle Neville Poelina is a Nyikina man who has lived all his life in the Kimberley and has traditional ties through family connections right throughout the region. Aboriginal culture and society is his life.
Neville holds a wealth of knowledge of the region, including the history, topography, flora and fauna and first-hand knowledge of the rich and varied Indigenous cultures of the area. His passion for sharing his culture, friendly disposition and considerate nature would ensure a truly enjoyable Kimberley experience.
Uptuyu offers nature-based tours to small groups of people in an intimate setting, providing a high-quality experience. As the name implies, your experience and chosen route of travel is Uptuyu!

Mini Masterclass: Marketing
Mini Masterclass with MURRA faculty member Michal Carrington.
Wednesday 30 August 1-2.30 pm
Michal teaches and researches in the areas of marketing ethics, marketing theory, strategic marketing, retail management/marketing, ethical consumption, consumer culture and consumer behaviour. Her research has appeared in the European Journal of Marketing, Marketing Theory, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Business Research and Higher Education Research and Development.
Michal is currently co-editing a interdisciplinary book titled ‘Ethics and Morality in Consumption: Interdisciplinary Perspectives’ to be published by Routledge, and co-convening an ESRC Seminar Series of the same title. Michal holds a BEng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Melbourne, and a PhD also from the University of Melbourne. Prior to entering academia, Michal spent almost a decade working for Unilever in Australia and the UK.

Geoff has been a key faculty member of MURRA for over ten years. Prior to completing his PhD at IE Business School in Madrid and his MBA at Melbourne Business School, Geoff held a number of senior strategy and operational risk positions at Deloitte (Sydney), GT Global (Dublin), TXU (London), IAMCO (London, Johannesburg), Egg Bank (London) and Credit Suisse (Singapore, London), where he was Vice President. He has also worked in the non-profit sector with Rafael HIV Services in South Africa and Raleigh International in Chile.
Geoff’s research explores short termism and risk taking by executives and has been published in the Harvard Business Review, Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal and more. He received research excellence awards from the University of Melbourne in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.
Geoff teaches Business Strategy, Corporate Strategy and the Social Entrepreneurs units on the MBA and Executive MBA programs and works with several Australian and international businesses, including Nissan Australia, Caltex, Astro, bioCSL, Australian Institute of Sport, Clemenger Advertising, Ports Australia, Manulife Bank, Victorian Multicultural Commission, Citipower, Z Energy (NZ), Department of Premier and Cabinet, Care Super, REST Super, Cenitex, Indigenous Business Australia.
